Artist statement

My work explores a subjective and sometimes emotional response to scientific or religious concepts and phenomena. Seeking ways to explore these themes, I employ a variety of approaches. Drawing, Painting, Installation, Music and self-generated Crafts: all forming the basis of my work.

I frequently harness apparently random splashes of ink, to which I apply various measures and control. Using drawing systems to manipulate and process, I am re-appropriating splashes as data and as material to be processed.

Splashes are emblematic of ‘heroic’ Abstract Expressionism and of Modernist Action painting. They are also suggestive of both quantum micro and cosmic macro scales and are as likely to resemble stellar nurseries as biological cells and geographical masses as cosmic phenomena.

Drawing links subjective self-expression and the supposed universal objectivity of illustration. My work plays with these two notions, questioning both drawing’s ability for expressiveness and illustration’s suggestion of objective detachment.
